Update on the changes for the Trucks coming next build!
ZitatAlles anzeigen2024 Season 3 - NASCAR Craftsman Truck Update
Hello everyone! The 2024 Season 3 release will bring the first major overhaul for the NASCAR Truck Series since their introduction to the service. This is a significant set of changes that bring the Trucks up to date and change both the handling characteristics and how the chassis is set up for open series.
Aerodynamic Updates
The most significant change is the implementation of a modern aerodynamic map for the trucks. Previously the Trucks have used an older, simpler aerodynamic map fitted to the newer body styles, and the new aero map for Season 3 is based on the most current body styles seen in the truck series.
The biggest change is a reduction in downforce with an increase in sideforce, which changes the handling characteristics significantly. While the older aero map was known for easily being able to run many 1.5-mile tracks at wide-open throttle for extended periods, the new aero map either doesn’t provide enough downforce to do it at all, or will only allow it for a handful of laps. It’s still enough aero performance that brakes may not be necessary, but staying wide-open will prove to be a challenge.
The new aero map has altered the aerodynamic height targets from the past heights, more information on these can be found in the NASCAR Truck User Manual on the iRacing website.
Chassis Updates
Updates to the chassis have three major changes: Front suspension rework, Ride Height sensor locations, and rear end damage from over-travel.
First, and the one that will affect everything the most, is a change in the front suspension from the older coil-binding style springs to the modern “pigtail”-style springs. Essentially, the front springs will have two rates with the initial rate set at a constant 200lb/in (this can’t be changed in the garage) and a secondary rate that can be changed in the garage. The point where this secondary rate takes over is adjustable through a Spring Rotation Angle, which rotates the spring in the lower spring bucket to move the binding half of the spring inboard or outboard to move the transition sooner or later in suspension travel. In principle this will work similarly to a bump-spring style setup but without the packers. Rough height is set via the Spring Angle setting and then the front end is fine tuned with ride heights (which doesn’t affect the bind timing like it would with bump springs). In testing this has kept the front end down in all situations while keeping some compliance in the suspension for bumps and changing loads.
The second change, which isn’t nearly as big but is important, is a change to the ride height sensors for the garage. In the past, the location for the garage ride heights and the telemetry ride heights were not exactly 1:1 and differed slightly. Now these sensors are the same and correlate 1:1 between the garage and telemetry.
Lastly, a damage penalty has been implemented for over-traveling the rear of the truck and impacting the bottom of the chassis too hard. This will happen at rear travel amounts that will be difficult to achieve unless the rear end is set up too soft or intentionally too low, so it’s not a major concern for most. Damage to the rear will become apparent by visible damage and scrapes to the lower-rear parts of the door panels and a loss in aerodynamic performance. This damage is not fully repairable and will always have some amount of aero penalty once the damage is done.
These much-needed changes to the NASCAR Trucks bring the vehicles up to a modern specification and performance levels and will undoubtedly change many aspects of how the cars perform. These changes are just the latest in our efforts to continue to improve the realism aspect and overall quality of our oval racing experience.
